Data & Infrastructure

The Balsac population database currently contains more than 6 million records spanning nearly four centuries. This data contributes to a wide range of research, both in the social sciences and in the biomedical sciences.

Data on the territory

This interactive map shows the number of baptism, marriage, and burial records contained in the database for each region of Quebec. Here is an overview of the coverage of the Balsac data for all of Quebec:

  • Complete coverage for:
    • marriages in all regions prior to 1970*;
    • births and deaths in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and Charlevoix prior to 1970*;
    • births and deaths in all other regions prior to 1800.
  • Partial coverage for births and deaths in all other regions after 1799.

*After 1970, the coverage is very incomplete.

Scientific research

Access to data for research purposes may be granted to researchers who submit a request, provided that the request is consistent with the purpose of the Balsac population database.

Access is granted in the form of a loan of a dataset extracted from the database and provided to the principal investigator through the Researchers Service.

Public access

Since 2025, Balsac data spanning more than 100 years has been available to the public through the Quebec Participatory Cohort (CopaQ) citizen science platform. CopaQ is a citizen science platform that invites people interested in contributing to Quebec’s genetic and genealogical data.
